Bunk lists
S. Pellegrino publishes an annual list of the world’s 50 best restaurants. There is also a link on the list for #51-100.
These lists should be viewed with acute skepticism, but they’re also fun to look at. It appears I have a bit of work to do, as I’ve only been to two restaurants in the top 50 (Alinea in Chicago and Momofuku in NYC). I figure I should be able to hit several more before I die, particularly the New York ones (Per Se and Le Bernardin) and the French Laundry (although technically at #56).
Interestingly, two of the Momofuku restaurants are in the top 100. Really? I enjoy those places, but TWO entries in the top 100 in the WORLD? I call bullshit.
Place on top 50 I’m least likely to go to: the #1 restaurant, Noma in Denmark or the #35 restaurant, Chez Dominique in Finland.
Place on top 50 I’m most likely to go in a non-U.S. and non-U.K. country: D.O.M. because I’m dying to visit Brazil before I die.
29 of the top 50 are located in Europe (not including the U.K.), exposing possibly a Euro-centric bias. But then again, Europeans generally know how to eat. Except for the Germans.
