I’m not really a cream puff guy, but…
Sawtelle Boulevard is great. Lot’s of good places to eat and to walk to on a warm, beautiful Saturday night, especially when you just want to retire early and have a good night’s rest afterwards.
Hide Sushi is not one of them. Why is there always a huge-ass line for this place? It’s the west side sushi equivalent of The Pantry in downtown Los Angeles. Every time I drive by The Pantry, I witness a throng of humanity longer than the Friday-night Southwest boarding line to Las Vegas. Is it the tradition of mediocre, stomach-ache inducing breakfast foods? Is it the horrible service? This is coming from a man who would an Indian buffet for breakfast. Totally mystifying.
Likewise, the Saturday night wait for a table at Hide is equally mystifying. The sushi is not very fresh or inspiring. Is it the relatively lower prices? In my humble opinion, its worth it to save a little bit longer for the restaurant budget (I know its a recession) to go to Kiriko across the street.
To wipe the bad taste from my mouth, I strolled next door to the Nijiya market to re-load my supply of mochi and dried soba noodles. On the way there, I passed Beard Papa’s and the alluring smell of cream puffs proved to be irresistible. Awesome! I recommend the original vanilla custard.
Like a child who occasionally disappoints you with their adolescent behavior, Sawtelle brings you back with an endearing display of wide-eyed innocence.
