Echigo
When a friend excitedly informs me that his or her favorite sushi place in LA is “situated in a strip mall”, I usually find it difficult to feign interest in what I have believed to be an obvious truth for many years.
However, when I went to Echigo near Bundy the other day, I was finally amazed at the consistency of the strip mall truism. Chalk this place up as another strip mall sushi incubator.
Pros: very good fleshy sushi pieces. Skipjack, tuna, “butter” fish, albacore, yellowtail. Blah blah blah. $45 omakase dinner meal. Extremely casual. Overly friendly waitress.
Cons: omakase focuses only on fleshly fish - no sea urchin, no clams (like Sushi Park), no ebi, etc. It is also extremely simple - no soup, no seaweed salad, etc. The sushi rice is also a tad on the over-saturated side, but still good. - H. Lee
