Banana Leaf
As I anticipate embarking on another 9-5 gig soon, I won’t be able to have many more carefree lunches at the Singaporean counter at the Grove farmer’s market, the Banana Leaf.
What this does mean, however, is that I can now resume an old, favorite past-time: hating and resenting the silent majority of Los Angelinos who are able to leisurely shop for dog cardigans at 2:30 pm on a goddamn Wednesday. Yes, I’m talking about you, trust-fund-hipster-wearing-an-overbearingly-self-referential-t-shirt. Yes, I wish a voodoo curse on you too, overindulged Beverly Hills trophy-wife-who-cuts-me-off-in-her-ugly-Mercedes-SUV-while-talking-on-the-phone.
Of course I’m not referring to the disaffected unemployed class who are looking for jobs in earnest, nor am I referring to the legion of people who work hard in service industry jobs but happen to have flexible schedules. I’m just saying that if you were recently a contestant on The Bachelor and are ahead of me in line at Ralph’s, please step aside so I can get home in time to watch you whore out in primetime. Yes, my time IS more valuable than yours. Your ass got eliminated in the second rose ceremony.
If you have the good fortune of being one of the aforementioned, try the rojak salad. It consists of a tangy and slightly spicy peanut tamarind sauce, apples, cucumber, spinach, bean sprouts, lightly fried tofu and pineapple. Delicious! - H. Lee
