The Golden State Cafe (http://thegoldenstatecafe.com)

This place, along with Animal, opened a block away from my apartment near the Grove on Fairfax Avenue.  This is equivalent to an elementary school and a non-board certified plastic surgeon moving next door to Neverland Ranch.  Hmm, too soon?  Well screw it.  It’s true.

While nothing here re-invents the wheel, Golden State keeps it simple and therefore compelling:

1) a shortlist selection of Scoops gelato for dessert;

2) very good burgers (I’m going back to try a bratwurst which I hear are good as well); and

3) a tasty list of local/regional California beers for $5.

After reading “Omnivore’s Dilemma”, I have had recent nightmares about our country’s military-industrial corn feed industry.  Unfortunately I’m going to have to make an exception for Golden State’s corn-fed beef burgers, because folks, the damn place is 2 blocks from where I live. -  H. Lee
